Cut tax in pubs says health expert

A leading health expert has suggested that the government could tackle the twin problems of alcohol abuse and the demise of many British pubs by cutting VAT on alcohol sold in pubs.

Dr Nick Sheron, a co-founder of the Alcohol Health Alliance, wrote in the British Medical Journal this week, ”Pubs are expensive to run and have to charge more for alcohol. As a result, they pay more VAT, which puts the price up even further, but this is a novel solution.’
