Commission publishes latest Gambling Survey

14/11/2012

The Gambling Commission has published its survey data on gambling participation, based on two separate sets of questions commissioned by the Gambling Commission in omnibus surveys conducted by ICM Research.

The survey was made up of two sets of questions, one gauging participation in all types of gambling and the second looking specifically at remote forms of gambling.

For the last quarter of the year up to September 2012, the survey found that 56.9% of the 4000 adults surveyed had participated in at least one form of gambling in the last month. This is down slightly on the previous year when 57.3% had participated.

The most popular form of gambling remains the National Lottery (47.5%) followed by scratchcards (12.7%) and tickets for other good cause lotteries (9.7%). Betting on horse races, private betting with family, friends or colleagues, and gambling on fruit or slot machines were the next most popular activities (3.8%, 2.7% and 2.6% respectively). Interestingly, betting on virtual gaming machines at a bookmakers dropped from 1.8% to 1.4% in the last quarter (see table below).

Those participating in gambling were more likely to be male than female, and were more likely to be aged over 45.
