Sound’s latest retro jukebox – Rocket 88

25/10/2011

Sound Leisure has created a 1950s style retro jukebox in collaboration with leading high street brand Dr. Martens.

The Silver Age Jukebox is called Rocket 88 after the song of that title recorded by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats back in 1951 – a track widely credited as being the first ever Rock’n’Roll record.

“For many years our Classic Jukebox Division has longed to recreate a 1950s jukebox and we got the opportunity this summer when we were approached by the world-famous shoe retailer Dr. Martens. We had previously manufactured a jukebox for them in the early 90s and this time they wanted us to base the design on an iconic 1950s model. There was only one catch – they wanted the jukebox for the opening of a new store which was opening at the giant Westfield shopping centre in East London in just 7 weeks!”

The Sound Leisure team, headed by Alan Black, worked around the clock to meet this seemingly impossible deadline. “I doubt there is another company in the world who could create a product like the Rocket 88 in such a short space of time,” adds Chris. “Thankfully we can handle every part of the production process in-house from design to metal and woodwork. The finished jukebox is truly a work of art.”

The first Rocket 88 is now on site in the Dr. Martens store in Westfield and more jukeboxes will be rolled out to other sites in the upcoming months. In addition, Sound Leisure clients have been visiting the showroom in Leeds to see the new model and orders have already been placed. “There is a real buzz around this machine – it seems that many of our overseas customers have been waiting for us to do a 1950s jukebox as well. We are thrilled with the response,” concludes Chris.
