Super Casino licence to be awarded in Leeds by next year

19/10/2011

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that council bosses in Leeds hope to award the licence for the city’s biggest ever casino by the end of 2012.

In an article by aul Robinson this week it says Government ministers gave the city council permission to license a so-called ‘new generation’ gaming complex back in 2008.

Now, after careful fine-tuning of the licence award process, a timetable has been drawn up which shows major progress is expected on the project over the next 12 months.

It reveals that the council is planning to advertise in February for potential bidders to run the Las Vegas-style casino.

Bids will be evaluated using criteria such as their likely social and economic benefits plus their chances of deliverability.

The timetable indicates that, if all goes according to plan, the casino licence should be granted by December 2012.

Details of the proposals are set out in a report to be considered at a meeting of the council’s licensing committee tomorrow.

It says every effort has been taken to try to ensure the decision-making process is “robust” and “mitigates the risk of legal challenge by being fair and transparent”.

Leeds is among eight towns and cities with permission for new casinos that will each be about three times the size of the current UK norm, with up to 150 slot machines offering maximum jackpots of £4,000.

Experts have said Leeds’s scheme could attract more than £20m of private sector investment and create around 700 jobs.

It is understood that the council will not be promoting any specific location as a potential home for the casino while the licence applications are being considered.

Firms that have previously expressed an interest in the Leeds project include Stanley Leisure, Grosvenor Casinos and Aspers.

Confirmation of Leeds’s successful bid for the green light to join Britain’s gaming revolution in February 2008 coincided with the axing of plans for an even larger ‘supercasino’ in Manchester.
