Colin remembers.. Ruth Ellis

13/04/2011

Colin Mallery has rubbed shoulders with many unusual and interesting characters in his time in the industry, but one of his first jobs left a very lasting impression.

“While I was still a teenager, I worked for Gordon Walker, Fred Walker’s son and I used to have to go and service a Rock-ola jukebox and a Jennings Governor fruit machine that we had put in a drinking club in Knightsbridge. The club was owned by a woman called Ruth Ellis.

She was always really friendly to me and remembered my name and got me a drink while I worked. She was not a stunning looking lady, but she was vivacious. You could see that she was a really good hostess at the club. She even introduced me to a few people. I met Lord Boothby there once and Bona Collino the famous actor of the time.

Anyway, this story doesn’t have a happy ending as everyone can guess. I turned up one day to service the machines and the club was closed. That’s how I found out that she had been arrested for murdering her lover David Blakely. I was stunned, I can tell you. I followed the case closely and I could ‘t believe it when she hanged.”

Colin,
She was the last woman to be hanged in England. I also have picture of you with Dennis Rawlins, Dave Synes, Bob Deith, John Holmes and Don Holman in the Deith Soccer Team in 1976.

Cheers Colin.
